Scrapbooking Tips: How to Start a Baby Book

How to Start a Baby Book

One of the most exciting moments of my life was the birth of my first child. I knew that I wanted to create his baby book from scratch. I wanted to make sure it was chock full of his special moments, firsts and to document every adorable smile and event. However, those first few months are full of sleepless nights, cuddles and poopy diapers. How am I ever going to get a chance to start his baby book and complete it the way I want?
My solution: complete one (title) page for every month. So when he hit 1 month we took his picture, many pictures and repeated this every month thereafter. When he was 2 months I created the title page for his 1st month and displayed it in a scrapbook frame in the room we spend most of our time. I journaled a few things I wanted to remember and left it up for his entire 2nd month. This way I was experiencing his 2nd month and looking back on his 1st. Plus, I felt that getting at least one page done was a true accomplishment. I did this all the way up to his 6th month when life started to get away from me. However, by the time that he reached 1 year old I have at least 6 pages completed of those months that are just a blur to me now. Now, I can go back and fill in pages based on pictures I have taken and what I want to remember.

Moral of the story: Some is better than none!

  1. I love this idea and it's so much more personal than the books you buy or are gifted even if they are lovely. I just love the personalisation. I don't think Ellie's baby book has ever been totally completed, sad really, but I get lots of lovely experiences from looking at it regularly. I always planned to write letters every year on her birthday till she got to 18 but that never happened, now that is a regret.

Keep up the great work, do you teach others to do this?

Actually just had a look on your website and I love your earrings.

  2. Heather, Thank you for your comment! I love to teach others scrapbooking and stamping techniques so I host regular crop events and gatherings to do so. Also, I am so glad you like my jewelry. I have been making jewelry since childhood and now making it a business. I am in the process of uploading new stuff this week. Check back! Thanks again!

  3. I started scrapbooking when my oldest was 5 years old so to catch up quickly I did the page-a-month that you suggested. It worked a treat as well! :)

    1. That's great!! Sometimes it is hard to make time for hobbies like this, but it is so important to record the memories. And it is a great excuse to have fun! Thanks for your comment!!

  4. I love this.... I am so glad I have been writing since before my youngest was born. His entire life has been categorized via my writing, but I wish I had had a digital camera when my daughters were younger!

I love your page and your writing voice. Just reading you makes me smile... and especially since Granny-dom is right around the corner...

    1. Hi Julie,
Thanks for your comment! I am lucky to have access to digital cameras, camera phones and video this day and age. I don't have much from documenting my childhood, but it was a lot harder to capture everyday moments. Now we have almost no excuse. Congrats on becoming a Grandparent, it really is a special thing.
